Transtibial rehabilitation protocol

Rehabilitation starts: one week after two stage BADAL X implant surgery or 3 weeks after single stage surgery

Week 1: Progressive weight bearing on BADAL X

1. Prosthesis fitting, including connector instructions

2. Progressive weight bearing on a scale until 100% body weight

3. Instructions for stoma care

Week 2: Walking on BADAL X between parallel bars

1. Stance- and balance training

2. Gait training: Various gait patterns (e.g. sidewards, backwards, stopping and turning)

Week 3: Gait training with BADAL X and two crutches

1. Basic gait training using crutches in 3-point gait and 2-point gait

2. Climbing stairs

3. Gait training on uneven surfaces

Week 4: Advanced gait training

1. Gait training without a walking aid

2. Gait training with slopes, obstacles, dual tasks

Transfemoral  rehabilitation protocol

Rehabilitation starts: one week after two stage BADAL X implant surgery or 3 weeks after single stage surgery

Week 1: Progressive weight bearing on BADAL X

1. Prosthesis fitting, including connector instructions

2. Progressive weight bearing on a scale until 100% body weight

3. Exercises for hip mobility, muscle strength and core stability

4. Instructions for stoma care

Week 2 and 3: Walking on BADAL X between parallel bars

1. Stance- and balance training

2. Gait training: Various gait patterns (e.g. sidewards, backwards, stopping and turning)

Week 4 to 6: Gait training with BADAL X and two crutches

1. Basic gait training using crutches in 3-point gait and 2-point gait

2. Climbing stairs

3. Gait training on uneven surfaces

Week 7-11: Advanced gait training

1. Gait training without a walking aid

2. Gait training with slopes, obstacles, dual tasks

Focus points during rehabilitation

  • Pain of stump muscles may be an important limiting factor in weight bearing capability and gait rehabilitation
  • An interlude in the rehabilitation program may be required if pain is a limiting factor for gait training without a walking aids
  • When stump muscles become stronger by exercise, muscle pain reduces and unsupported symmetric gait improves
  • Alignment and settings of the prosthesis are depended of the rehabilitation phase. The prosthetist will continuously optimize BADAL X alignment and settings whenever needed.
